Parada San Juan Bautista Receives Generous
Support from Enterprise Foundation

Deptford, NJ – (June 19, 2009) – The extended spirit of generosity from the Enterprise Cars Sales’ Philadelphia Group was evident this week, as they presented a $2,500 donation from the Enterprise Foundation to Camden-based Parada San Juan Bautista.

The presentation was made at South Jersey Federal Credit Union’s Deptford headquarters office. SJFCU is also a major supporter of Parada San Juan Bautista. The Enterprise Foundation has generously supported Parada San Juan Bautista and its varied events for several years.

SJFCU names Jason D. Henckel as Branch
Manager/Business Development and Sandra LaCourse as Assistant Manager at New Moorestown Office

(Deptford, NJ) – (May 27, 2009) -- South Jersey Federal Credit Union (SJFCU) has named Glassboro resident Jason D. Henckel as branch manager/business development at its new Moorestown branch, located at the intersection of North Church Street and New Albany Road. SJFCU also appointed Sandra LaCourse, a Voorhees resident, as assistant branch manager.

Henckel is responsible for business development in the Moorestown region and for overseeing the daily operations and staff of the Moorestown office; LaCourse assists Henckel with daily branch operations and overseeing staff.

Prior to being named to his post at Moorestown, Henckel worked for more than two years as an account development representative in SJFCU’s business development department. In that capacity, he successfully managed a territory of more than 100 select employee groups (SEGs) focusing on relationship management to further member growth with each SEG.  Henckel earned his bachelor’s degree in business, with a specialization in management and entrepreneurship, from Rowan University in 2006.

Ken Barnshaw, SJFCU Assistant Vice President,
Elected to Deptford School Board

Deptford, NJ – (April 22, 2009) - The voters of Deptford Township have spoken – and they elected one of South Jersey Federal Credit Union’s own.

Ken Barnshaw, SJFCU assistant vice president/business development, and a resident of the township’s Blackwood section, was elected to a three-year term on the Deptford Township School Board Wednesday, April 21. Barnshaw received the second highest vote total of the six candidates running for three open seats on the board.

A native of Deptford Township and lifelong resident, Barnshaw joined SJFCU as assistant vice president in 2006. Previously, he had served as vice president at the former First Union and CoreStates banks, with more than 30 years’ experience.  Barnshaw studied business at Gloucester County College, and also attended the PBA School of Banking at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pa.

Barnshaw ran on a platform of fiscal responsibility and accountability to both taxpayers and district employees. “Township taxpayers look to the school board as custodians of a $62 million budget. I ran to manage these funds in a cost-efficient manner, to keep expenses at the lowest level possible,” he said. “I hope to expand the channels of communication with local state and federal elected officials to seek Deptford’s fair share of funding and stimulus relief earmarked for schools.”

Barnshaw is no stranger to elected office; he served as a Deptford Township councilman from 1987 through 1995. His public service record includes service as president of the Deptford Ambulance and Rescue Squad as well as president of the Gloucester County Ambulance and Rescue Association.  He has also been active for years with the county EMS council and is a member of the Union Fire Company, based in Blackwood Terrace.

SJFCU Honors Earth Day

Deptford, NJ – (April 22, 2009) – In the years since the first Earth Day celebration in April 1970, interest in all things environmental has grown tremendously.

Here at SJFCU, for example, our new Operations Center is being constructed as a green building according to LEED® standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED® certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building is environmentally responsible, energy efficient and a healthy place to work.

SJFCU has been leading up to Earth Day with a Member Appreciation Drawing in all branches, which began April 9 and runs through April 25. The winners of each branch’s drawing will receive a green canvas tote bag filled with eco-friendly items along with a filtered water pitcher with reusable water bottles.

Today, on Earth Day, SJFCU’s kicks up the activities a notch. All members visiting a branch today receive a green SJFCU Earth Day recycled-material tote bag with the special message, “Helping You to be Good to the Earth.”

For homeowners 62 years of age and older, a reverse mortgage allows an individual or couple to turn the equity of their home into cash. That extra cash can supplement seniors’ existing income or be used for medical expenses.

New Operations Center Rising at Deptford Headquarters of South Jersey Federal Credit Union

Deptford, NJ – (September, 2008) – With backhoes and bulldozers as a backdrop, officials of South Jersey Federal Credit Union (SJFCU) broke ground on a new 30,000-square-foot Operations Center, directly behind the Deptford headquarters branch.

Joining SJFCU officials and board members at the ceremonial groundbreaking were representatives of R2Architects Inc., of Voorhees, and IMC Construction of Malvern, Pa., the construction management firm overseeing the project.

Pictured at the August groundbreaking event are, from left, Benjamin T. Griffith, SJFCU president/CEO; James Puderbach, chairman, SJFCU board of directors; Paul Medany, Deptford Township mayor; John Ruiz, R2Architects; and Ted Jeffries, senior contract manager, IMC Construction.

The new two-story operations center is expected to be completed in summer 2009. It will complement the existing Deptford headquarters branch building, which remains open for business as usual through the duration of the construction process. Growth of various SJFCU administrative departments – including lending, accounting and other support functions – created the need for more space. The current branch building will continue to serve as a branch after the operations center is complete.

The new Operations Center project will follow benchmark guidelines of the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System. LEED®, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is a nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. In the LEED® rating system, points are awarded for achievement of environmentally sound benchmarks, in areas such as efficient use of water, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, efficient energy usage and innovation in design. Those responsible for the design and building of the new Operations Center are aiming for LEED® Silver Certification.

“The growth evidenced by our physical plant expansion is due to our steady growth in business,” said Benjamin T. Griffith, president/CEO of SJFCU. “That growth is thanks to the hard work and dedication of our employees.”

Camden, NJ – (January 10, 2008) -- What was Delores Mixon's first reaction when she learned she'd won the SJFCU Holiday Donation Drive drawing? “Oh, I've never won anything before,” said Mixon, who obviously has reversed that trend.

During the 2007 holiday drive, SJFCU staff encouraged members to donate money for the purchase of food and new toys for needy families in South Jersey. More than 1,300 entry forms, in the shape of cans, were deposited at SJFCU branches, as part of the $2,200 collected in total.

Mixon's entry form was plucked from all submitted entries. The Pennsauken resident, a City of Camden employee, was thrilled to receive a $100 Wegman's gift card.

SJFCU celebrates International Credit Union Day October 18th

Deptford, NJ – (October 16, 2007) -- Thursday, October 18 is International Credit Union Day. Credit unions throughout the country – and the world –celebrate the credit union movement every year on the third Thursday in October. This year's International Credit Union Day theme is Credit Unions: Together We're Better.”™

All branches of South Jersey Federal Credit Union (SJFCU) are marking the occasion with special gifts for members, as well as a drawing for a gift basket. It's a way to share with members the credit union difference, marked by

•  non-profit status, and
•  member ownership of the credit union, a financial cooperative.

A Brief History of Credit Unions: In the 1840s in Germany, Herman Schulze-Delitzsch and Freidrich Raiffeisen created the first credit unions, for farmers. Farmers could pool their money to buy supplies in large quantities at lower prices. The principles of cooperative ownership by members and a member-elected board are still credit union hallmarks.

In the early 1900s, credit unions were first established in North America in Quebec, Canada. The idea spread to the United States, and in 1909 the first U.S. credit union – St. Mary's Cooperative Credit Association – was established in Manchester, N.H.

A Boston, Massachusetts, merchant, Edward Filene, helped popularize credit unions in the early 20 th century; the Credit Union League of that state held the first holiday to honor credit unions in 1927. The date, January 17, was chosen as it was the birthday of America's “Apostle of Thrift,” Benjamin Franklin.

After a hiatus during the years of the Depression and World War II, in 1948 the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) set October's third Thursday as the celebratory date.

All seminars begin at 9 a.m. and run for approximately one and a half hours. Attendees do not need to be members of SJFCU to attend, but pre-registration is required, by calling 800-582-7640 .

For homeowners 62 years of age and older, a reverse mortgage allows an individual or couple to turn the equity of their home into cash. A reverse mortgage is a loan, or lien, against the home that an owner does not have to pay back for as long as he or she – and spouse, if applicable - lives there. The reverse mortgage offers a chance for people to remain in their home while taking care of financial obligations. It's an opportunity for seniors to benefit from extra cash to supplement their existing income, to cover medical expenses, or to help a loved one.
